Driving Test Cancellation: Rules, Refunds, and Rebooking

What happens if you cancel or the DVSA cancels on you — and how to get your fee back.

4 min read

Cancellation rules are strict and catching learners out costs them the full test fee. Understand the rules before you need them.

The Full Guide

You must cancel or change your test at least 3 clear working days before the test date to get a full refund. "Clear working days" means weekdays only, not counting the test day itself or weekends. Example: if your test is on Friday, you must cancel by midnight on Monday (3 clear working days = Tue, Wed, Thu).

Common Faults

  • Miscounting working days and cancelling too late
  • Forgetting bank holidays when calculating the 3-day window
  • Not cancelling at all and simply not attending

What the Examiner Looks For

    Quick Tips

    • 1Count back carefully — weekends and bank holidays don't count
    • 2If in doubt, cancel early — it costs nothing extra
    • 3Keep the DVSA confirmation email — it has your cancellation deadline
    • 4A no-show is treated as a cancellation within 3 days — you lose the fee
