Driving yourself to your test? You need your own insurance.
Your instructor's policy does not cover you when they're not in the car. Don't let a £300 fine ruin your test day.
Specialist learner insurance · Instant cover · From under £10
It's a legal requirement. If you drive a private car without valid insurance — even on a provisional licence with a supervisor — you risk a £300 fixed penalty, 6 penalty points on your licence before you've even passed, and your car being seized and crushed.
Two options — both fully comprehensive, both instant.
Option 1
Test Day Only
Just need to get yourself to the test centre and back? Buy a few hours of cover — nothing more. Start the policy that morning, drive to your test insured, drive home. Job done.
Best for
Learners who have done all their practice with an instructor and just need to drive to the test centre safely.
Option 2
Practice + Test Day
Get 30 days of cover so you can practise in a family car every evening this week, then drive to your test. Studies consistently show that learners with more practice miles pass sooner — and this gives you 30 days to get them in.
Best for
Learners who want to squeeze in extra practice before their test and give themselves the best possible chance of passing first time.

— Aisha, 18
Do I legally need insurance to drive to my test?
Yes — if you're driving to the test centre yourself, you must have valid insurance. Your instructor's policy only covers you when they're physically in the vehicle. Without your own insurance you risk a £300 fixed penalty, 6 penalty points, and your car being seized.
Will a claim affect my parents' no-claims bonus?
No. Learner driver insurance is a completely separate policy in your name. If anything happens, the claim is made on your policy — not the car owner's. Their no-claims bonus is fully protected.
What's the cheapest option just for my test day?
Hourly cover is the cheapest — you buy exactly the hours you need. For a morning test you might only need 3–4 hours. GoShorty let you choose the exact start time and duration.
Why get 30-day cover instead of just test day?
Extra practice in the week before your test makes a real difference to your pass rate. With 30-day cover you can practise every evening in a family car, then drive yourself to the test. Many learners find the extra mileage gives them the confidence they need.
How quickly can I get covered?
In under 10 minutes online. Answer a few questions, get a quote, pay, and your policy document arrives by email instantly. Cover can start immediately — even the same day as your test.
What if I fail — does the cover still work for a retest?
With 30-day cover yes — you're insured for the full month so you can practise more and take a retest if needed, all on the same policy.
Don't leave it until the morning of your test. Get a quote now and have one less thing to worry about.
