Q: Show me how you would clean the windscreen using the windscreen washer and wipers.
A: Switch on the ignition. Operate the windscreen washer stalk and confirm the washer fluid jets and wipers work.
Q: Show me how you would set the rear demister.
A: Point to and switch on the heated rear windscreen button. Confirm it is working.
Q: Show me how you would open the bonnet and tell me how you would check the engine has sufficient oil.
A: Pull the bonnet release, lift the bonnet, locate the oil dipstick, explain how to check the oil level is between MIN and MAX marks.
Q: Show me how you would check the parking brake is working.
A: Apply the parking brake, engage a gear, gently move off to confirm the brake holds the car, then release.
Q: Show me how you switch your headlights from dipped to main beam.
A: Switch on the headlights and demonstrate operating the main beam stalk or switch, pointing out the blue main beam indicator on the dash.
Q: Show me how you would check that the horn is working.
A: Press the horn to demonstrate it works. This is usually done off the road before setting off.
You answer these verbally before setting off — the examiner asks while you are seated in the car.
Q: Tell me how you would check that the brakes are working before starting a journey.
A: The brakes should not feel spongy or slack. Test them as you set off — they should not pull to one side. Check the brake fluid level is between MIN and MAX when cold.
Q: Tell me where you would find the information for the recommended tyre pressures and how you would check them.
A: Tyre pressures are in the vehicle handbook or on a sticker inside the driver's door or fuel cap. Check with a pressure gauge when tyres are cold.
Q: Tell me how you would check that the tyres have sufficient tread depth.
A: The legal minimum is 1.6mm across the central three-quarters of the tyre. Use a tread depth gauge or the tyre wear indicators. Check across the full width.
Q: Tell me how you would check the direction indicators are working.
A: Switch on the ignition and operate the indicator stalks. Walk around the car to confirm all four indicators flash — or use the reflections in a wall or garage door.
Q: Tell me how you would check the power-assisted steering is working.
A: Gently push against the steering wheel when starting the engine. If PAS is working, you will feel a slight movement as the system engages. Alternatively, check the dashboard for a PAS warning light.
Q: Tell me how you would know if there was a problem with your anti-lock braking system.
A: An ABS warning light will illuminate on the dashboard if there is a fault. If it stays on after starting, there is a problem that needs checking.
