Motorway Driving: Joining, Lane Discipline, and Speed

Since 2018, learner drivers can take motorway lessons. Here's what you need to know before your first motorway drive.

7 min read

Since 2018, learner drivers in England, Scotland, and Wales can drive on motorways with an approved driving instructor in a dual-control vehicle. Motorway driving isn't part of the standard test, but learning it builds confidence and speeds up your development as a driver.

The Full Guide

Use the slip road to build speed that matches motorway traffic — aim for 60–70 mph before merging. Check your mirrors and blind spots early. Give way to traffic already on the motorway. Merge into a safe gap in the left lane — don't stop on the slip road unless traffic is stationary.

Common Faults

  • Joining too slowly — not matching motorway speed
  • Middle lane hogging
  • Not returning to left lane after overtaking
  • Braking sharply when approaching gantry speed limits
  • Failing to check blind spot when changing lanes

What the Examiner Looks For

  • Mirror checks before every lane change
  • Correct use of lanes throughout
  • Smooth, progressive approach to speed management
  • Appropriate response to variable speed signs

Quick Tips

  • 1Think 12 seconds ahead on motorways — far more than town driving
  • 2Use the 2-second rule (4 seconds in rain) — gaps close fast at 70 mph
  • 3If you miss your exit, carry on to the next one — never reverse on a motorway
  • 4Practise on a quiet Sunday morning with your instructor first
