Since 2018, learner drivers in England, Scotland, and Wales can drive on motorways with an approved driving instructor in a dual-control vehicle. Motorway driving isn't part of the standard test, but learning it builds confidence and speeds up your development as a driver.
Use the slip road to build speed that matches motorway traffic — aim for 60–70 mph before merging. Check your mirrors and blind spots early. Give way to traffic already on the motorway. Merge into a safe gap in the left lane — don't stop on the slip road unless traffic is stationary.
