All Types of UK Pedestrian Crossings Explained

Zebra, pelican, puffin, toucan, pegasus — know every crossing type and what behaviour the examiner expects at each.

6 min read

There are five types of pedestrian crossings in the UK, each with different signals and rules. On the driving test, you'll likely encounter at least two or three. Treating any crossing incorrectly — failing to stop, or stopping unnecessarily — will earn a fault.

The Full Guide

Pedestrians have priority once they step onto a zebra crossing. You must give way. Approach at a speed you can stop from. As soon as you see someone waiting or stepping on, slow and prepare to stop. Do not wave pedestrians across — this can be dangerous. Flashing amber beacons (Belisha beacons) mark zebra crossings.

Common Faults

  • Failing to give way to a pedestrian on a zebra crossing
  • Accelerating through a pelican/puffin crossing on amber when pedestrians are still crossing
  • Stopping at a green light unnecessarily — mis-reading the crossing type
  • Not stopping promptly at the line when the light turns red
  • Driving through a toucan crossing during a cyclist's phase

What the Examiner Looks For

  • Appropriate reduction in speed approaching all crossings
  • Correct response to each crossing's signals
  • Giving way when pedestrians are on zebra crossings
  • Not stopping unnecessarily when the crossing is clear
  • Pulling up to the stop line — not stopping before it

Quick Tips

  • 1Pelican flashing amber = proceed IF clear. All other crossings: wait for green.
  • 2Approach every crossing at a speed you can stop from — pedestrians can appear suddenly
  • 3Never gesture pedestrians across — your hand signal can be misinterpreted
  • 4Look for the crossing type as you approach — it changes what the amber light means
