Failed Your Driving Test?

Over half of all learners fail their first test. Here's exactly what to do next — including how to get an earlier retest date for free.

What to do after failing

Follow these steps in order.

1

Read your DL25 fault report

The examiner will give you a printed DL25 showing every fault marked. This is your most valuable document. It tells you exactly what went wrong — treat it as a personalised revision guide, not a rejection letter.

2

Wait the mandatory 10 working days

You cannot rebook your practical test until 10 clear working days have passed since your failed test. Weekends and bank holidays do not count. You can rebook your test during this waiting period — you just can't sit it.

3

Book targeted lessons with your instructor

Share your DL25 with your instructor and focus exclusively on the faults marked. If junctions were your issue, practise junctions. If mirrors were the problem, develop a mirror-check habit. Avoid generic practice and address the specific failures.

4

Rebook your test

Log back into gov.uk/book-driving-test and pay the full test fee again. The earliest available slot will likely be 8–16 weeks away due to demand.

5

Use TestSwap to get an earlier retest date

Once rebooked, register on TestSwap and request a swap to an earlier date. Our matching engine runs 24/7 looking for learners with earlier slots who want a later one. Free — no cancellation needed.
