The DVSA theory test costs £23 for cars and motorcycles. But that's just the start — failing means paying again, and waiting months for a practical test slot adds up too.
Here's the full breakdown of every fee, what to do if you fail, how long your pass lasts, and how TestSwap helps you reduce the total cost of getting your licence.
All fees are set by DVSA and apply whether you book online at gov.uk or by phone.
Car
£23
Most common. Covers the multiple-choice and hazard perception sections.
Motorcycle
£23
Same fee as cars. Taken at the same DVSA theory test centres.
LGV / PCV
£26
Lorry, bus, and coach drivers pay a slightly higher fee.
Remember: If you fail, you pay the full fee again every time you resit. There's no reduced rate for resits and no cap on how many times you can retake.
Your fee covers one complete test session at a DVSA theory test centre. No additional payments are required on the day.
You arrive at your booked DVSA theory test centre, show your provisional driving licence (photocard), and complete both sections of the test on a computer. There's a brief practice run before the real questions begin. Results are given to you immediately at the end of the session — you find out on the same day whether you've passed. The whole visit takes around 1.5 to 2 hours including registration and waiting time.
Two things that catch many learners off guard — and add unexpected cost.
You pay the full fee again every single time. There is no reduced resit rate. If you fail 3 times, you've spent £69 on theory tests alone — before even booking your practical.
Your theory test pass certificate is valid for exactly 2 years. If you don't pass your practical driving test within that window, your theory pass expires and you must retake — and pay — again.
With practical driving test waiting times frequently running at 3 to 6 months across many parts of the UK, learners who pass their theory test early in their training can find themselves approaching or exceeding the 2-year limit. If that happens, you pay £23 all over again — even though your driving ability hasn't changed. Getting an earlier practical test date through TestSwap is one of the most straightforward ways to protect your theory pass and avoid that extra cost.
The theory test is only one part of what you'll spend. Here's the full official fee picture.
| Fee | Car (weekday) | Car (eve/weekend) |
|---|---|---|
| Provisional licence (DVLA) | £34 | £34 |
| Theory test (DVSA) | £23 | £23 |
| Practical driving test (DVSA) | £62 | £75 |
| Minimum total (pass first time) | £119 | £132 |
Driving lesson costs not included. Average learner takes 45 hours of professional lessons before passing.
Each theory test resit adds £23. Each practical resit adds £62 to £75. According to DVSA data, the national first-time pass rate for the practical test is around 47–48% — meaning more than half of all candidates pay for at least one resit. Two failed practical attempts on weekdays means an extra £124 on top of your minimum costs.
The most important thing you can do to control costs: pass first time (focus on preparation), and get the earliest possible test date so you're testing while your skills and confidence are at their peak — not 5 months after your last lesson.
The £23 theory fee is almost a footnote compared to what practical test resits cost.
Monday to Friday daytime slots cost £62 per attempt. This is the standard rate for most learners.
Evening and weekend test slots are more in demand and cost £75 per attempt.
The practical test is approximately 40 minutes of actual driving, plus eyesight check, safety questions (show me/tell me), and debrief.
Long practical test waiting times don't just mean frustration — they directly increase your total spend. Here's how:

TestSwap to get earlier practical
TestSwap won't change the DVSA fee for your theory test — that's fixed at £23. But it can significantly reduce your total cost of getting a licence.
Here's how: by getting you an earlier practical test date, for free.

Our matching engine sweeps all 359 UK test centres every 15 minutes for a mutual swap.
Swap dates with another learner. Both call DVSA on 0300 200 1122. Your DVSA test fee doesn't change.
An earlier test means you test while your skills are sharp — reducing the need for expensive top-up lessons to maintain your ability over a long wait.
Testing sooner after your intensive training window means better performance and a higher chance of avoiding a £62–£75 resit fee.
Getting an earlier practical date reduces the risk of your 2-year theory pass expiring before you complete both tests — saving another £23.
No card required. No subscription. Covers all 359 DVSA test centres.
Know your rights before you book — and before you cancel.
Cancel or reschedule your theory test booking with at least 3 clear working days' notice before the test date and you'll receive a full refund of the £23 fee. DVSA processes refunds back to your original payment method.
Cancel with less than 3 clear working days' notice and you forfeit the full £23 fee. The same applies if you miss the appointment entirely. You'll need to pay again to rebook a new test slot.
Note: "Clear working days" means weekdays (Monday to Friday) excluding public holidays. The day of your test and the day you cancel do not count. So if your test is on a Monday, you must cancel by midnight on the preceding Wednesday at the latest to qualify for a refund.
You've passed your theory test for £23. The last thing you want is to wait 5 months for a practical test slot, pay for extra lessons to stay sharp, and risk your theory pass expiring. TestSwap helps you get an earlier practical date — free.
