Bay Parking: Forward and Reverse Explained

Bay parking is on every driving test. Learn both forward bay parking and reverse bay parking with reference points.

8 min read

Bay parking was added as a compulsory manoeuvre in 2017. You'll either do a forward bay park (drive in, reverse out) or a reverse bay park (reverse in, drive out). The examiner picks one — you won't know which until they ask. This guide covers both.

The Full Guide

Drive past the target bay until the first bay line appears in your left-wing mirror. Apply full left lock (or right lock if parking on the right side) and reverse slowly. Look into the bay as you reverse — aim to keep parallel to the bay lines visible through your rear window. Use all mirrors throughout. As the front clears the bay edges, straighten the wheel. Stop when you're fully in the bay and within the lines.

Common Faults

  • Ending up over a bay line or on an angle
  • Not checking all mirrors and blind spots before reversing out
  • Reversing too fast — control is everything in a car park
  • Mounting the kerb when reversing out
  • Not signalling when pulling away from the bay
  • Not straightening the wheel before stopping

What the Examiner Looks For

  • Reasonable accuracy — reasonably straight, within the bay lines
  • Correct use of mirrors and observations throughout
  • Slow, controlled speed during the entire manoeuvre
  • Awareness of pedestrians and other vehicles at all times
  • Proper signal when pulling out of the bay

Quick Tips

  • 1Ask your instructor which reference points work in your specific car
  • 2Do it slowly — the examiner penalises speed, not slowness
  • 3If you're way off, you can pull forward and correct — one correction is not an automatic fault
  • 4Car parks are pedestrian hotspots — look out of every window
