Turn in the Road: Should You Still Learn It?

The turn in the road was removed from the compulsory test manoeuvres in 2017 — but it's still a vital real-world skill every driver needs.

5 min read

The turn in the road — sometimes called the three-point turn — was officially removed from the list of compulsory driving test manoeuvres in December 2017. However, most instructors still teach it because you might need to do it during independent driving or if the examiner uses a road that requires it. Knowing how to execute it safely is a core skill.

The Full Guide

Signal right (optional on quiet road). Check all around. Move forward slowly, turning the steering wheel briskly right. When you approach the opposite kerb, straighten and stop. Engage reverse, check all around again. Reverse slowly, steering left. When approaching the kerb behind, straighten and stop. Move forward to complete the turn. Three moves if the road is wide enough.

Common Faults

  • Mounting or touching the kerb
  • Insufficient observation before each move
  • Rushing — causing loss of control
  • Taking 5+ moves on a wide road (should be 3)

What the Examiner Looks For

  • Controlled speed throughout
  • Full 360° observation at every stage
  • Reasonable accuracy — not touching kerbs
  • Confident, purposeful steering

Quick Tips

  • 1Steer quickly, move slowly
  • 2You can take more than 3 moves if the road is narrow — it's not a fault
  • 3Pick a reference point on each kerb to know when to straighten up
  • 4Always expect pedestrians to cross mid-manoeuvre
