Moving off uphill without rolling back is a core clutch control skill. Here's the biting-point method that makes it reliable.
A hill start is simply moving off from a stationary position on an uphill gradient without rolling backwards. The technique relies on finding the clutch biting point before releasing the handbrake — eliminating the window where the car can roll back.
Press clutch fully down. Select first gear. Apply a little more gas than you would on flat (about 1,500rpm rather than 1,000rpm). Slowly raise the clutch until you feel the biting point — the engine note drops and the front of the car "firms up". Hold this position. Release the handbrake fully. As the car begins to move forward, slowly release the clutch the rest of the way and increase gas.
