Since 2017, pulling up on the right and reversing back is one of the four compulsory manoeuvres. Here's how to do it correctly.
The "pull up on the right" manoeuvre was introduced in December 2017 as part of the DVSA test update. It replaces reversing around a corner and the turn in the road. You drive to the right side of the road, stop, reverse back approximately two car lengths, and then rejoin traffic.
The examiner will ask you to "pull up on the right-hand side of the road when it's safe to do so." Check mirrors. Signal right. Move to the right side of the road. Stop parallel and close to the kerb. Apply handbrake. The examiner then asks you to reverse two car lengths. Check all around (particularly over right shoulder). Reverse slowly, keeping close to the right kerb. Stop. Check all around before rejoining traffic, signal, and move off.
