Find Your Driving Test Swap

Since 31 March 2026 — DVSA Change Limit Now 2 Per Booking

Used Both Your DVSA Test Changes? Here's Your Only Option.

DVSA blocked you from changing your date again — but you can still swap it. A peer swap does not count as a change, it is completely free, and it is explicitly approved by DVSA.

Your situation right now:

  • You've used 2 DVSA changes — no more allowed
  • Your current test date doesn't work for you
  • Cancelling means losing £62 and waiting 22 weeks
  • DVSA's booking portal shows no available earlier slots

You are locked out of DVSA changes

Since 31 March 2026, DVSA limits every practical test booking to 2 date changes total. Once you have used both, the DVSA system will not allow another change request — no matter how far in advance your test is or how good your reason is.

Previously the limit was 6 changes per booking, which gave learners far more flexibility. The new 2-change cap means thousands of learners are now stuck with dates they cannot move through normal channels. If this is you, you have two options — cancel (and lose your slot and your £62), or swap.

Two paths forward. One obvious choice.

When DVSA blocks you from changing, these are your only two options.

Option A

Cancel your test

  • Lose your £62 test fee immediately
  • Must give 10 clear working days notice (new rule)
  • Your test slot released to other learners
  • Rebook — join the back of a 22-week queue
  • 25+ week wait in London
  • Start the entire booking process again
  • No guarantee of a better date when you rebook

Option B

Swap on TestSwap

  • Completely free — no fee whatsoever
  • Keep your existing £62 test fee
  • Does NOT use one of your 2 changes
  • Legally approved by DVSA
  • All 339 UK test centres covered
  • Matched with a partner who wants your date
  • Simple 5-step process — takes minutes to register

The key distinction

Why a swap does NOT count as one of your 2 changes

A DVSA "change" is when you log into your DVSA account and use the official change-date function. DVSA records this against your booking reference and decrements your remaining changes from 2 to 1, then 1 to 0.

A peer swap works entirely differently. When you swap, both you and your partner each call DVSA on 0300 200 1122 and give the operator the other person's booking reference. DVSA then reassigns each booking to the new date. Because you are not using the "change date" function at all — you are providing a swap reference — DVSA does not log it as a change against your booking. Your change counter is not touched.

This is officially documented at gov.uk/guidance/swapping-your-driving-test-with-another-learner-driver. TestSwap handles the matching — DVSA handles the transfer.

In plain English:

DVSA's change limit applies to the "change date" button in your DVSA account. The peer swap call does not use that button — so the limit does not apply. Even with 0 changes left, you can still swap.

How to swap your test date in 5 steps

From registration to new test date — typically 1–5 days at busy centres.

1

Register free on TestSwap

Create your account at testswap.com. No payment card needed — the swap service is completely free.

2

Add your current booking details

Enter your DVSA booking reference, test date, time, and centre. Specify the date range and centres you'd be willing to swap to.

3

Get matched with a swap partner

Our matching engine runs every 15 minutes. When we find a learner whose date you want and who wants yours, you both receive a notification.

4

Both parties agree to the swap

You each confirm the match in the TestSwap app. Once both agree, we release each other's DVSA booking reference to you.

5

Both call DVSA together

Each of you calls DVSA on 0300 200 1122 and gives the operator your partner's booking reference. DVSA processes the transfer — done. No change recorded, no fee charged.

Every week you wait makes your position worse

If you cancel today and rebook, the earliest date you can expect is November or December 2026 in most areas — and that is if you get lucky. London learners are routinely seeing waits stretching into 2027. Each day you delay the decision pushes that estimated date further back, as more learners cancel and rebook ahead of you.

Swapping locks in a real date with a real learner — not a speculative slot that may never materialise. The learner holding the date you want is registered on TestSwap right now, looking for someone like you.
