Three major changes to how you can book, change and cancel your DVSA practical driving test came into force between March and June 2026. Here is exactly what changed — and what you can still do.
All three are now in effect. Here is what changed, when, and what it means in practice.
Before
You could change your test date or time up to 6 times before it was cancelled.
After (now)
After just 2 changes, your booking is automatically cancelled. You lose your slot and must rejoin the queue — currently 8–22 weeks depending on your region.
Before
Driving instructors could book and manage tests on behalf of their pupils. Cancellation-checker apps (DriveBot, PassSlot, etc.) could auto-rebook you into earlier slots.
After (now)
Third-party booking and rebooking is now illegal. Any service that accesses DVSA systems on your behalf violates DVSA terms. Cancellation-checker apps that auto-booked slots have lost their core feature.
Before
You could move your test to any of the 339 UK test centres — including switching to a "quieter" or "easier" centre far from home.
After (now)
When changing your test, DVSA now restricts you to the 3 centres closest to your registered home address. You can't hop to a different city's centre to find an earlier date.

You have one change remaining. Use it carefully — once you use your second change, any further attempt to move your test will cancel your booking entirely. You'd then face an 8–22 week wait to rebook. Consider swapping instead of changing.
Find a swap partner freeYou cannot change your test date or time at all. Your only options are: keep the date you have, cancel (losing your slot and joining the queue), or swap your date peer-to-peer with another learner. A swap does not count as a change — it is a separate DVSA-approved mechanism.
Swap your date — it's freeSince June 2026, you can only switch to one of the 3 centres nearest to your home address when making a change. But if you swap peer-to-peer through TestSwap, you can swap to any of the 339 UK test centres — the centre restriction does not apply to swaps.

DVSA explicitly approves peer-to-peer swapping
See gov.uk/guidance/swapping-your-driving-test-with-another-learner-driver — the official guidance confirms the mechanism and the steps.
Fully compliant with every new DVSA rule. No third-party touches your booking.
Create your TestSwap account and enter your current test date, time and centre. No payment required.
Set your preferred date range and any centres you would accept. TestSwap searches all 339 UK centres — not just your nearest 3.
Our matching engine finds a learner whose current date matches what you want, and whose target date matches yours. Both of you agree to swap.
Once matched, you each receive the other person's test reference number. You call DVSA (or log in online) and rebook to their date — no third party involved. This uses one DVSA "change" or none if you rebook rather than change.
